MBA Required Courses (24-27 Credits)*
Healthcare Administration Specialization Courses (12 Credits)
* Some essential knowledge is required prior to admission to the MBA program. During your application process it will be determined if you meet all requirements; students who meet them will be waived from MBA 507 and will earn a 36 credit MBA. Those who do not meet all the requirements must complete MBA 507 to acquire the foundational knowledge necessary to be successful in the program and will earn a 39 credit MBA.
MBA Required Courses
This course introduces MBA students to the theories, context, and managerial value of financial and management accounting. The role of accountants, the accounting equation, the accounting cycle, and financial reporting will be presented. The use of relevant accounting data to analyze internal operating decisions, allocate scarce resources, and assess overall firm health will be emphasized. This course is designed to provide specific skills for the workplace as well as showcase the accounting function as an important foundational framework for the pursuit of advanced business education.
The world is increasingly characterized by diversity and an integrated economy. Balancing the business opportunities and risks associated with dynamic and uncertain global changes is critical to effective leadership in this global economy. Leaders must learn how to integrate their understanding of culture, ethics, economic and policial issues into their decision making and strategy development.
Throughout history, technology provided opportunities for innovation, resulting in changes in business and society at a global scale. These technologies often disrupted business policies and processes, impacting jobs and organizational structures. Students examine how technological innovation is experienced in society and viewed over time and into the future by business people, philosophers, and sociologists. Students explore the question, How do we imagine that business, society and our place within will be affected as technology continues to advance?
Students learn organization analysis from a holistic perspective. Financial reports and financial ratios are the basis for traditional organizational analysis and builds from that foundation into the analysis of customer, supplier and employee metrics. Focus is on the Balanced Scorecard and other holistic approaches.
Students use a framework to explore the dynamics of human interaction within and between organizations. Throughout the course, they will use a perspective that a key function of management is to negotiate for resources and use that perspective to develop collaborative relationships with employees, vendors, suppliers, and interested communities.
Students explore the development and execution of an innovative and imaginative business strategy for the future. They consider answers to questions, such as How do you identify an opportunity for a new business that meets an otherwise unmet need? What happens when an organization fails to change when faced with a challenge to their traditional model? What are the processes that organizations use to keep themselves focused on changing stakeholder requirements and needs?
Communities look to business to have a positive impact on the world through their actions, so organizations are changing the way they do business. Mission-driven for-profit organizations are examining their HR policies, supply chains, organizational structures, marketing and even finance as they adapt to purpose-driven business models. Students explore what it means to be a purpose-driven organization by examining new business models, and the fundamental changes and challenges an organization experiences when they view business through a multidimensional lens.
Explore concepts and frameworks for how to lead effectively in today's ever-changing world. Using an integrative reflective practice approach, students examine their own approach to leadership and create an initial plan for their own leadership development, as well as the leadership development opportunities for their organization.
This course is built around a project that is designed to apply, in a comprehensive manner, the core areas of knowledge around which the MBA has been built. The project may be performed for a current employer, a sponsoring workplace or as an internship as either a service-learning project for a qualifying nonprofit organization or another organization of the student's choosing.
The MBA 590 Capstone course must be taken only after all other courses in the program have been completed.
Healthcare Administration Specialization Courses
Students learn about the U.S. health care system, including the government's role in the industry, cost and quality issues, managed care, reimbursement mechanisms, legal and regulatory issues, profit vs. non-profit care, the role of technology, and then compare it to international health care systems. Students will begin to conceptualize new models of delivery through analysis of barriers to process improvement and the use of design thinking and analytics. Students will appraise development, implementation and management of system components.
Managing information as a strategic resource is challenging. Students will design IT systems to capture, combine, and transform data into information to measure processes/outcomes of care, support clinical decision-making and management decisions, empower patients, and improve health care operations. Students explore health information systems within the context of associated business processes to develop innovative solutions. Management of change as related to clinical systems will also be stressed to help build buy-in, engage individuals and ultimately improve workflow and system design.
Students learn to apply elements of regulation, law and ethics to the administrative process in a variety of healthcare settings and situations. Healthcare administrators can avoid many legal disputes by understanding basic concepts such as patient rights, informed consent and privacy regulations. Course themes include the legal barriers that interfere with process improvement, malpractice, and the limits on sharing information across institutions. Students analyze recent legal developments, including the Affordable Care Act, medical marijuana, and right to die legislation.
Complete HCMT-515 concurrently or prior to HCMT-535.
This course is designed to introduce a systemic process for planning, organizing and controlling healthcare projects using design thinking and innovation. The course presents a practical methodology for completing projects more quickly with fewer problems. Student work consists of readings, research, class special-topic presentations, group activities, a project management journal, and participation in a real world healthcare project. Students will be encouraged to apply project-management techniques to solve existing real-world healthcare business problems using design thinking and innovation.
Complete HCMT-515 concurrently or prior to HCMT-545.

Healthcare Administration Specialization Learning Outcomes
- Explain and compare the organizational elements and structure, delivery modalities and barriers to system and process improvement...for US and global healthcare systems, and, using existing and proposed system designs and innovative and design thinking, conceptualize more effective systems.
- Maintain accurate financial records, prepare budgets, analyze variance and assess financial opportunities and risks, making recommendations for action based on organizational goals, data visualizations, management techniques and GAAP metrics.
- Apply the methodologies used in healthcare finance and reimbursement processes to evaluate and execute decisions regarding optimal organizational and system direction.
- Create policy and processes, and execute decisions in compliance with the legal, regulatory and ethical considerations inherent in managing healthcare systems and organizations, with particular attention to information technology processes and structure and how these considerations impact all aspects of healthcare delivery
- Develop innovative solutions to strategic, tactical and operational issues in managing healthcare systems and associated information technology through the combined use of information, data analytics, organizational knowledge, talent management and critical and design thinking.
In addition to the admission requirements for all graduate program applicants, our online accredited MBA program has specific requirements that must be met.
Work Experience Requirement for Healthcare Administration Specialization Applicants:
If you are planning to complete the Health Care Administration Certificate for the MBA, you are expected to have a minimum of 2 years experience or current employment in a healthcare setting with opportunities for applying new skills in the health care field.
Business or Management Bachelor's Degree Requirement
If your bachelor's degree is not in business or management you may be required to successfully complete MBA 507: Survey of Accounting for Managers. Those who meet the requirement will earn a 36 credit MBA, those who do not must complete MBA 507 will earn a 39 credit MBA.

Linda Miller, PhD, CPA, is Associate Professor and Assistant Dean for Champlain College Online. She is responsible for the online accounting and integrated studies programs, as well as the MBA and master's in human relations and organization development programs. Following 12 years in accounting, business, and consulting positions, Dr. Miller has spent over 20 years in higher education at a variety of schools, including Bucknell University, the University of Vermont, and Pennsylvania State University, where she also taught in the executive education programs.
With an education focus primarily in adult and online education, Dr. Miller has enjoyed developing a wide variety of online certificates and degrees in business-related areas, including supply chain management and leadership. Dr. Miller continues to research best practices in online teaching and learning and to create opportunities for Champlain College Online instructors to develop their online teaching skills. Other specific areas of interest for Dr. Miller include the impact of technology on supply chains and the effective teaching of transformational leadership.
Dr. Miller holds an M.S. in Accounting from Pennsylvania State University and a PhD in Business Management (School of Supply Chain Management) from the same. She is a member of the International Leadership Association and the Society of Supply Chain Management Professionals.
